Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of our project was to raise money for the animal shelter and raise awareness to adopt pets instead of buying them from a puppy mill.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
After long thought of Carlee, Amanda, Tia, and I decided that we wanted to do something to help others so we thought of some charities we can donate to. After a few days we came up with the almost home animal shelter. We pick this place because it's in the area and we can do more for it because it's so close to us but also because we all love animals. After we got the place to help to we thought about what to do for them, so get came up with going there to volunteer and love on the animals. Sadly the shelter never called us back and we didn't end up being able to go.
We had a goal to raise around $250 and to achieve that goal we had to start making money. As we thought of ways to raise the money the group came up with the idea of making bath bombs. Bath bombs were a big trend at the moment and very easy to make. We made all the bath bombs at my house and used all the essential oils I had as the sent for it. We sold them for $3 and spread the word around the school and on social media. We also had two bake sales at the school in both lunches. Carlee, Amanda, and I all had the same lunch so Tia was alone at second lunch but luckily my sister and some of her friends helped her out.
After we raised the money for all the cute pets we had to get to the animal shelter to give them the check. It was hard to get together with everyone because they all had jobs and worked on different days. As it was approaching the end of the year and we still didn't get a day they were all off work we decided just to go after Tia got off one day. So we went to the animal shelter and talked to lady running the show and got a picture with her.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
When I started Genius Hour I knew that I wanted to do it on the animal shelter because every time I would go there it was sad to see the same animal there time after time. Although our animal shelter in Kingsford is a non-kill shelter, I started thinking about all the animals that weren't so lucky. In my research I had found out how many animals get euthanized a year and it shocked me.
My group got to talking about how we can raise money to make their living conditions better and raise awareness to others about how important it is to adopt and not get your pets from mills. It's important because if they are not adopted they would have to spent the rest of their lives in a tiny cage. As a group we decided to spread the word while we raised money by having a few bake sales during school lunches. We hoped that people heard what we had to say and adopt from animal shelters instead of mills and improved the lives of the animals living in the shelters.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If I could do anything different with my Genius Hour project I would probably try to be a more active in the community spreading the word and going to the animal shelter more and seeing the animals. I wanted to be able to volunteer also but there was an issue and they never called us back.
The reason I said I would reach out to the community more and sell to more people than just in the school at lunches. Getting out in the community would have been amazing and would have helped to raise awareness for our cause. Also helping out at animal shelter would have been a huge asset to the project but when we went there to talk to them they told us that we needed to wait for a class to open and they would call us when one opened. They never ended up calling us back but we still went and loved all the animals there anyway.

Carlee, Amanda, Tia, and I worked together and all did our parts. Tia always got more done then Amanda and Carlee. Not because Amanda and Carlee didn't do their part but because Tia and I like to just do it ourselves and make sure it's done our way plus we work well together. Our group asked the school if it was okay with them if we had a bake sale. Then approved us and we set up the next few days baking. When it was time for the bake sale we sole so much that we passed our goal. Since we passed our goal we decided to raise the bar a little and do another bake sale and raise more money. We raise $286.25 in less than a year.
We also made bath bombs at my house which was really easy to make and people loved them. We got together at my house and made a few scents and then got together later and made more as we needed to. It got a little hectic because because people wanted certain colors and scents and I couldn't make them alone but everyone else was working and couldn't help. Nevertheless we got them to people and raised almost $300.
